And the House of Cards still stands….

Howdy people!

Another year, another binge worthy season of House of Cards! I typically watch ALL the episodes on ‘premiere day’, but this year I had some other competing commitments so I could really only get everything finished last night.
For the benefit of those who don’t watch this show – by the way, if you fit into that category I’m literally judging you so hard right now considering it is one of THE best shows to ever grace our screens – House of Cards is an American Political Drama series, which portays the inner workings that hide behind the great speeches we hear television and the photo ops on the front page of our newspapers. In a nutshell, it tells of the strong arming, blackmail, perjury and criminal behaviour found in US politics; and the best part about it is that it’s all fiction right? Yeah, Right. I prefer the term not-so-loosely based, but that is a conspiracy theory I will not play out in this post πŸ˜‚.

The show tells the story from the perspective a political power couple, Francis and Claire Underwood, who chase their aspirations doggedly without concern for who they have to hurt, intimidate or even kill to achieve their goals. Along the way, it sheds light on their marriage, their relationships with their families, and their disregard for any and everyone who may interfere with their plans.

At this juncture, if you’re an HoC virgin, or you have some catching up to do and you hate spoilers, please run far away from this blog post till you’re done. For the rest of us, I have some important discussion points about Season 4 (and possibly bits and bobs of the entire show)

Perception & Personality

Heyyy!

First of all – HAPPY TUESDAY! I have had a pretty tough month filled with early morning alarms and way too much travel so I’m extra tireedddddd! I’m also behind on all my Shonda shows, sigh, but in other news I’ve started some new shows that you will all be hearing about in a few weeks! Woop!

I meant to write this post a while ago but I wasn’t sure if there was enough to talk about. I knew there was something to be said, but I kept wondering if it was an important discussion or if it was even relevant. Then I started thinking I was weird for even picking up on something so seemingly disjointed from the whole purpose of the episode or show in question, but I think there’s some value in this so lets consider it.

At the tail end of Suits Season 5 Episode 11, Jessica Pearson, Managing partner of Pearson Specter Litt, walked into one of named partner, Louis Litt’s sacred mudding sessions to offer him an apology. Jessica has previously accused Louis of going after her job and this pretty much sent him into reflection mode. He recognized that he would be kidding himself if he wasn’t honest about the fact that power such as Jessica’s would consume him – after all, he wasn’t Frodo (referring to the character, Frodo Baggins from Lord of the Rings). She felt bad about the accusation and told Louis that while he may not be Frodo, he was Samwise Gamjee. Thinking they had something in common, Lewis was instantly excited and said ‘Get the f…You read Lord of the Rings?’ Yup, she did. She had read it 4 times.  What I found most interesting about their conversation was how they each perceived JRR Tolken’s best selling trilogy. Jessica, read it four times because she felt it was about power – and trust me Jessica is all about wielding and retaining power. Louis, who is clearly a big fan but doesn’t share how many times he has read it, always thought it was about friendship.

That distinction struck a chord with me – Two people, talking about the same fictional story but believing it to be telling two separate stories – One of power, and one of friendship.

Happy New Month everyone!

I just wanted to dedicate one post to the few TV shows I’ve started in the past month and provide some links to them as well (considering I really hate it when I get told to check something out and get left to fend for myself! – so rude!). Typically, I troll TV guide and various american television sites using my free VPN plug-in, in search of the new shows for the season and the ones I want to start. Naturally I can’t watch them all at once, so I’ve started four now and will discuss these to begin with. Before I delve in, if you want to know what VPN I use (it enables you to watch shows on ABC, CWtv and all other American TV websites if you’re in a different country – and it actually does this for a lot of other countries including the UK) like the post and leave a comment with your email address, and I’ll send this out to you within 24 hours.

I’m going to start with my favourite one, and it surprised me so I’m sure you’ll be well shocked.

**SHADES OF BLUE : Starring – Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta

I know what you’re thinking – J-Lo’s acting isn’t that great right? I know, that’s what I thought. But this show has proved to me that perfecting your craft is a possibility. She has really brought her A-game on this one, and I have to say – her supporting cast isn’t bad either. The show is ‘another cop show’, but with a twist – she’s forced to become an FBI informant in a war against dirty cops on her close knit team after she is found to be one herself. Considering she has a young daughter, Christina, she was targeted by the Feds and told to turn on her mentor and closest friend, Wozniack, who is in charge of their corrupt crew. It is a great story that provokes thought about morality, loyalty and the lengths people would go to for family. Four episodes have been released thus far, and they can be found here:

It is definitely worth checking out! I have learned one valuable thing actually – How to cheat a polygraph! Interesting. Not that I ever would, but hey, its a fun fact!

Hey there, 2016…

Happy New Year blog fam!

I hope you all had an exceptional holiday – whether you were in a cold country hoping for snow that never came (:p) , or basking in the sun by a beach drinking cocktails and partying throughout the entire season (*cough* – like I was :p). The most important things about having some time off are being in the company of people you love, cherishing your short lived freedom, and achieving some of your personal goals – and I really hope Β that your holiday sounded a lot like that, regardless of location.

So, new year huh? Somehow, this one doesn’t seem as daunting as some of the years past. This could be because I tried to avoid general resolutions like ‘be a better you’ or specific ones like ‘lose 3 kg in the first couple of months of the year.’ My aim this year is to remain prayerful, focused and driven. I know it sounds a bit drab and largely unhelpful, but I think the ‘rules’ of any fresh start should be kept as simple as possible so that they remain front of mind as the year progresses. They should also be applicable to ALL other goals in different aspects of your life.
